Thanks to the internet, the world has become a global village. This makes it easy for employers to find the best talent for their team, and software developers can work remotely from thousands of miles away.

But a more connected world means you are not the only skilled programmer trying to get the attention of employers, leading to higher competition in the job market.

So, how do you make your voice heard in the race to get hired? Our team of remote software developers have a few tips for you below:

1. Set up an online portfolio.

Who hires a photographer just because they say they are a professional without seeing samples of his work? Talk is cheap!

You may have a list of impressive programming languages, design experience, and development tools you can use. However, a potential employer will be looking out for examples of your skill level. Your online portfolio can help clarify how technical you are based on the type of projects you have completed.

2. Blog about tools, programming languages, or projects you love.

Simply sharing your thoughts on development can give a potential employer insight into what it’s like working with you, as well as your creativity, passion, and interest in what you do. What you write doesn’t need to be a work of art (though it should be clearly written and free of grammatical errors). You don’t even have to be a complete expert on topics you write about.

Need some ideas of what to write about? Discuss your experience with a particular tool, language, or project. Describe the types of projects you like and dislike. Recount projects where you succeeded or failed (and what you learned in the process). You also do not need to get tons of traffic. You can write just for potential employers by including your blog link in your resume.

3. Partner with Software Agencies.

When employers outsource software projects, many prefer to deal with remote software development agencies instead of individuals. Agencies are oftentimes made up of freelance and full-time developers, so you can find a position that’s the right structure for you. Partnering with software agencies gives you the benefit of working big brand projects while alleviating the worries of sourcing clients by yourself.

4. Create an online course.

What better way to show your knowledge in an area of expertise than to teach it to others? You can create written or video courses and push your content to websites like Youtube, Udemy to gain exposure. As an added benefit, you may generate extra income from your courses along the way!

5. Create profiles on Linkedin and Github.

Potential employers are likely to look you up online to find out more about your skills and past projects. Make it easier for them to find you by including links to your professional Linkedin and Github accounts on your resume.

6. Offer helpful answers in online communities.

Become an active member of forums like Quora or Stack Overflow by giving insightful answers and advice. Including links to your profile in these communities is another way of showing potential employers your expertise and willingness to share knowledge in your field.

There is an employer out there who needs the tech and soft skills you possess; the challenge is getting them to notice you in a sea of qualified applicants. Once you can sell yourself as a professional in your field with the tips above, you may get that email response you’ve been waiting for!
