How To Become a Web3 Community Manager

A community manager is vital to the success of any crypto or blockchain project.

This is an exciting position because there are low barriers to entry, no technical skills required, and you'll be paid to learn about cryptocurrency and teach others to do the same.

I've compiled a list of 10 Web3 Community Managers to share their experiences, their best strategy for growing a Web3 community, and practical advice for newbies who want to get into community management.

1. Lotus Felix

Founder of Lotusbrain Studio

What is your best strategy for growing a Web3 community?

Community is the social fuel behind the growth of every Web3 project, from NFT to Defi. There is no denying that a Web3 community's loyalty is almost as important as a Web3 project's technological viability.

One of the most effective ways to grow a Web3 community is to focus so intently on the member experience that existing members are converted into community advocates.

What practical advice would you give to newbies who want to be Web3 Community Managers?

Prioritize building loyal disciples in your community over large numbers. In any project, a passionate member attracts tens of new committed members.

Also, the community's core objectives must closely align with the business's. This way, it is way easier to harmonize the anticipations of the community members while sustaining a uniform tone and vibe in the community.

2. Adam Western

Head of Community Growth at LunarStrategy

How did you get your first role as a Community Manager?

I started off as a community moderator and got thrown into a lot of communities at the same time. Within a month, I was managing the community as my responsibilities as a moderator grew rapidly.

What is your best strategy for growing a Web3 community?

The best strategy for growing the community is to make the community members a part of the project. When you have gotten community members to fight for your project and are out there telling the world about the project, then you have a great prerequisite to succeeding.

What practical advice would you give to newbies who want to be Web3 Community Managers?

I would recommend starting as a moderator.

If you do not get any jobs as a community moderator, join communities and sort of act as a community moderator. Some projects will see what you are doing and give you the job. Then I would also practice setting up Discord servers and learning everything about them.

You should also observe and question the community managers on the servers where you are. See what they are doing, how they are acting, and what you can learn from that.

3. Success Ola-Ojo

Community Manager at Astro Armadillos

How did you get your first role as a Community Manager?

I started out volunteering for projects in 2020 and 2021.

This was a very challenging time because I got no results despite giving it my all.

After submitting over 400 applications and applying for jobs on Cryptocurrencyjobs.com, I eventually landed my first role. I was interviewed, and the management didn't ask for my CV.

I was put on trial right away, and on the fifth day of the trial, I was presented with a permanent position.

What is your best strategy for growing a Web3 community?

The first step in community management is to improve your English writing and speaking skills.

Because you’ll be communicating most of the time, good use of language is necessary to scale. You must also understand the power of knowledge.

Whoever earns must first and foremost learn. Learn, learn, and learn because what worked yesterday might not work today.

What practical advice would you give to newbies who want to be Web3 Community Managers?

There is no universal rule for building a community, but I don't make light of my content. I definitely use content to push my community, and in the case of numbers, marketing is also necessary

4. Glory Rolland

Lead Community Manager at Near Finance Protocol

How did you get your first role as a Community Manager?

I started out as a volunteer, and the platform employed me.

What is your best strategy for growing a Web3 community?

An understanding of what the community is about will give you insight on how to grow it.

There are communities that are mainly educational platforms to educate people about the potential of cryptocurrencies. There are communities that are a subset of a crypto product. We also have communities that just have a token. Knowing what the community is all about is the first step.

One strategy is the use of ambassadors who promote the brand across social media.

You can also use senior partners and brands that collaborate with you on the project as a form of equity. Collaboration managers can also be used.

A collaboration manager is a person responsible for establishing these kinds of connections in a Web3 space.

Their responsibility is to find the best collections and negotiate with their executives. They also make sure that all winners are taken care of at the time when new tokens are generated.

What practical advice would you give to newbies who want to be Web3 Community Managers?

Understanding the basics of the cryptocurrency space is vital to getting your first job.

Volunteering is a way to get started, as most projects need people to help them grow. Being a volunteer puts you at the top of the list when applying for a permanent position.

Lastly, be a person of value. Because the space is still new and evolving, people want to learn and stay current on the latest trends in Web3.

Community differs; growing a community depends on what the community stands for and its goals. Getting started by teaching what you’re learning is the first step.

5. Johnmiracle Ejikeme

Marketing Manager at Chatzoka

How did you get your first role as a Community Manager?

My first role started at Vendible Labs.

I joined their TestNet campaign, took part in their challenges, and joined their Discord community. Due to my active involvement in the community, their HR manager was interested in me.

After some background checks and verification, I was hired as their official Community Manager.

What is your best strategy for growing a Web3 community?

The best strategy is based on integrity and education.

Integrity means being clear about what the project is all about, its benefits, what people stand to gain, and what the project is solving.

People tend to support what they believe in, and when the project is made clear to the community, they become evangelists for that project.

Education entails learning about the project's platforms and what they entail. This is very important, especially if the project has a product that people can use.

You talk about the benefits of the project to attract attention and create loyal customers.

What practical advice would you give to newbies who want to be Web3 Community Managers?

My advice for newbies is to be curious.

As an intending Web3 community manager, stay open to learning. Your tech stack will be communication and marketing, so you need to know how to communicate clearly and have basic marketing skills.

You should know very well about the project in which you're involved, so you can answer questions clearly about that project.

Basic leadership skills like negotiation, knowing how to manage people, handling angry customers, and managing chaos will help you manage Web3 communities.

6. Abdulakeem Alobowotan

Community Moderator at Excellerate

How did you get your first role as a Community Manager?

I got my first job through Telegram. I joined various DeFi projects on Telegram and reached out to the top executives of different projects about my desire to join their projects. After a while, I landed my first role.

What is your best strategy for growing a Web3 community?

The best strategy is to do it organically. Organizing different programs like giveaways, Twitter raids, competitions, and doing collabs with other projects.

What practical advice would you give to newbies who want to be Web3 Community Managers?

Learn first. Be equipped with details about blockchain, Web3, DeFi, decentralized organizations, etc. You don't need to know everything, but the basics of what Web3 is about should be at your fingertips.

Most importantly, be patient. Employers will need to first vet your skills before they hire you. Just be patient with the application process, but never stop improving and applying.

7. Richard Saunders II

Assistant Community Manager at Excellerate

How did you get your first role as a Community Manager?

I got my first paid job through LinkedIn. There is a community management agency called Excellerate, and I've been working with them for three months so far.

What is your best strategy for growing a Web3 community?

The best strategy for growing a Web3 community requires three platforms: Discord (community server management), LinkedIn (building the professional brand of that project), and Twitter (daily Twitter Spaces).

These are the main platforms I've focused on during my community management career, and it's good to know how to utilize all three simultaneously.

What practical advice would you give to newbies who want to be Web3 Community Managers?

If you're trying to grow a community by the numbers, you're already setting yourself up for failure. You need to grow your community by letting the members give your project feedback and allowing them to ease into it over time.

Get ready to deal with a lot of work, reports, and checking up on things. You should be using an application to help you with all of the projects you're working on.

By doing this, you'll be able to give any project a report or check in on it at any given moment.

8. Eniola Mercy

Community Manager at Web3Afrika

How did you get your first role as a Community Manager?

My first role as a community manager was a volunteer one.

I came into the space like every other newbie, and aside from taking courses on blockchain and Web3, I leveraged social media platforms and bigger communities to learn.

I got my first gig as a community manager from Twitter. This was the basis of my knowledge and experience as a community manager.

What is your best strategy for growing a Web3 community?

The best strategy is consistency and deliberate action. Making proper plans for your community and seeking help where necessary puts you in a good spot.

When all of this comes together, you see a community that grows at a good pace.

What practical advice would you give to newbies who want to be Web3 Community Managers?

As a newbie, you need to have a lot of interest in building communities. Your interest is what will keep you going even when the progress is not going smoothly.

Have a set of goals and work towards achieving them. Join a community where you can learn. Learning is not restricted to a platform.

Leverage Twitter and LinkedIn, and take networking as seriously as you can. The sky is your starting point.

9. Joseph Carlo Marcelo

Assistant Community Manager at Zbyte Foundation

How did you get your first role as a Community Manager?

I got my first role by providing feedback on other communities. My first job came from taking the initiative to improve the community and providing critical feedback on their project.

What is your best strategy for growing a Web3 community?

Be genuine and consistent.

What practical advice would you give to newbies who want to be Web3 Community Managers?

Work for free and gain experience first.

10. Carelee Writes

Crypto Journalist.

How did you get your first role as a Community Manager?

I got into blockchain technology in early 2019 through an NFT session on Clubhouse.

This piqued my interest, so I took a course on Coursera on the Blockchain Revolution in Financial Services. This led me to create a podcast called Blockchain for Beginners, which landed me my first role.

I was new to the space, from setting up a crypto wallet to understanding what Web3 is, so your lack of knowledge should not deter you.

What is your best strategy for growing a Web3 community?

Know the crypto project from top to bottom. As a community manager, you are expected to bridge the gap between the project and the people. Having a keen interest in what the project entails will help you make sales.

What practical advice would you give to newbies who want to be Web3 Community Managers?

Having basic communication skills is a plus.

You're not only there to answer questions about the project but to answer complaints too. The ability to handle these sorts of questions is important too.

Joining the overall Web3 communities that you like is a plus, so as to get direct feedback on the community roles that are available.

Organize your social media accounts, such as Twitter, Discord, and LinkedIn. Volunteering and internships are a great way to get your foot in the door if you don't have any experience in community management.
