Culture preparation C. reinhardtii strain CC-125 (Chlamydomonas Resource Center, University of Minnesota, MN, USA) were cultured on a solid medium prepared with TrisAcetate-Phosphate (Gibco™ TAP, ThermoFischer Scientific, France) and agar every 4 weeks, to keep the strain motile, responsive to light and prevent as much as possible the cells from sticking to the walls of the devices. For experiments, colonies of C. reinhardtii were picked from solid cultures and recultured in liquid TAP. The cultures were placed in an agitating incubator at 176 rpm, under a day/light cycle of 14h/10h with an illuminance of 60 µmol · m−2 · s −1 and at a fixed temperature of 22◦C. The cells reached maximum motile cell density within 3 days [16], after which a solution of swimming C. reinhardtii was obtained. Before being used for experiments, the cultures underwent a series of centrifugation steps. This enabled to concentrate the algal solution, get rid of low-motility and dead algae, and of cellular debris. First, 45 mL of the liquid culture were centrifuged at 1057g for 10 minutes. Then, 39 mL of the supernatant was removed, and the bottom 6 mL were centrifuged at 73g for 2 minutes. The supernatant, containing the motile cells, was kept and centrifuged again at 285g for 5 minutes. The amount of supernatant was adjusted to obtain the desired algae final concentration. B. Experimental setup An array of shallow cylindrical wells was made in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS, Dow-Corning Sylgard 184), using standard soft lithography techniques [17]. The wells had a depth of 32 µm and diameters ranging from 200 µm to 500 µm. The PDMS was rendered hydrophilic by plasma cleaning. Then, a drop of ≈ 10 µL of the algal solution was deposited on the PDMS. The device was closed with a plasma-activated glass slide by applying gentle pressure. The trapped algae were observed under a Nikon TI microscope, using a 4x objective. Images were recorded at 10 fps with a CMOS camera (Hamamatsu ORCAFlash4.0 LT, Hamamatsu Photonics, France). A longpass red filter with a 645 nm cut-on wavelength (Newport RG645) was placed between the microscope’s light source and the microwells. A 3 mm blue LED with a wavelength λ = 470 nm and a light intensity of 7000 mcd (Plan`ete Leds, France) was placed on the microscope’s plate, approximately 2 cm away from the microfluidic chip, on the same plane. The LED operating voltage range was between 2.4 V and 3.2 V and its operating current was 20 mA. The light intensity was tuned by varying the applied voltage. An illustration of the setup is shown in Fig. 1. The algae concentration ϕ was determined in each well from images captured at the beginning of the experiments, before exposition to a light stimulus. Initially, the algae swam randomly and were distributed homogeneously in each well. They were identified by thresholding the images, and the total area they occupied in each well was determined. The concentration in algae was then defined as the fraction of surface area occupied by the algae in the well. C. Measuring the local light intensity We estimated the local light intensity inside a well using the number of photons reaching the sensor of the camera. First, we determined the camera offset value by blocking off all the light to the camera and taking a 16-bit image. The spatial average intensity in grey value of all the pixels in the image was the camera’s offset. Then, a 16-bit setup image of the sample was taken at the current experimental condition, with the light of the microscope turned off and the blue LED light on. The camera offset value was then subtracted from each pixel in the setup image. The grey values were first converted to number of electrons by dividing each pixel in the image by the conversion gain of the camera. The electrons were converted to photons by dividing the number of electrons from each pixel by the quantum efficiency (QE) of the sensor at λ = 470 nm. I grew up watching the San Diego Chargers play in what was then called Jack Murphy Stadium and now find myself looking at stadiums from a totally different perspective. This Super Bowl, like years before, will bring large crowds once again that will demand connectivity and are expected to consume record breaking volumes this year. reported that last year’s attendees at Super Bowl 52 in Minnesota transferred 16.32 Terabytes of data with a peak rate of 7.867 Gbps! This is an enormous demand for connectivity and the technology involved could poses a security risk for event organizers, partners, sponsors and attendees as their activities in the stadium begin to produce more digital oil–data. Extreme Networks A Seamless Digital Game Day Experience There are few sporting events in the world as large as the Super Bowl. Last year there was an estimated 103 million viewers. The Super Bowl generates a lot of excitement from media, fans and the public. Beyond the hype of the game itself, there is a variety of multimedia technology available to fans, providing a more immersive and interactive experience. These experiences include Super Bowl Live, a 6-day series of concerts and events in Centennial Olympic Park in Downtown Atlanta, and the Super Bowl Experience, an 8-day event full of exhibits and interactive games inside the Georgia World Congress Center. The DAS system is owned by the stadium and rented out to the four major US cellular carries for additional coverage. The stadiums WiFi is also provided by AT&T and consists of two redundant 40gb connections. The stadium also contains 2,000 IPTV for delivering game content provide by AT&T’s DirectTV. These features and network help ensure fans can watch, eat, share, download and communicate their game day experience with others. When it comes to planning for the future, the stadium has pulled its fiber optics as close to the access points as possible, terminating in mini intermediate distribution frames (IDF) throughout the stadium. The network gear is from Aruba and Hewlett Packard Enterprise while others involved with the network include IBM, Corning and ThinkAmp. Recently, IBM and Corning built one of the more technology advanced stadiums with a blazing fast network for Texas A&M. What’s more, Mercedes-Benz Stadium also promotes a mobile app. While this app is not as cutting edge as the one for Levi Stadium, for example, it does include information about the stadium, news, scores, as well as viewing, buying and transferring tickets and parking. A short trip to China reveals incredible everyday technology and a modern-day gold rush As with any looking for the next gold rush, I’ve been eyeing the Chinese market with great interest. At the invitation of the Chinese government, I’ve spent the last two weeks in Guangdong, China getting to know its tech ecosystem and exploring opportunities for collaboration. entrepreneur During my two weeks there, I saw weaved intricately into people’s lives, in a way that I’ve haven’t seen anywhere else in the world. To understand business in China first requires an understanding of how deeply ingrained technology is in people’s everyday lives. technology Here are some observations and anecdotes from my time there, which will hopefully give other entrepreneurs looking to expand into China a very tiny (perhaps superficial!) glimpse into this land of endless possibility. The next gold rush is already here. 1. WeChat is not just payments, it is everything A visit to WeChat’s offices in Guangzhou By now most people would have heard of WeChat. It’s China’s version of Facebook + Whatapp + Venmo, on speed. And that is understating the power of WeChat. At 9am during our visit, there are 750 million people using WeChat Someone has just given you their business card? Scan the QR code to add them on WeChat. Most business cards now come with a QR code so that people can easily add them on WeChat In a tiny village somewhere and need a snack? Pay the street vendors on WeChat by scanning their QR code. Scan the QR code, up from WeChat pops an audio tour and Chinese & English description of the place. At a heritage building in a little village. Scan the QR code on WeChat to find out the history of the building! Want a drink from the vending machine? Simply scan the QR code, take your drink and WeChat will automatically detect and deduct the price of whatever you have taken. It’s like Amazon Go, except that the technology has been in China for so long that no one thinks much of it anymore. Cashless, automatic vending machines Want to choose a song on KTV? Scan the QR code on screen and pick your songs via WeChat. (Oh and as an aside, they can also score how well you’re singing in real-time!) Just scan the QR code on your phone to see the song list, choose a song, or send an emoticon to the screen! Ran out of charge on your phone? For RMB 1 per hour, you get to rent a charger, all payable on WeChat Pay of course. These charger rentals are seen everywhere — such is the reliance of the Chinese on their phones And that’s just scratching the surface. Takeaway? Any business catering to the Chinese market needs to understand WeChat and all its potential uses. It can be a payment channel, a social network, a distribution channel, a storefront and so much more. It is a utility. [Without a Chinese bank account, it’s not possible to transfer money into your WeChat Pay account. Previously, entire tour groups used to come to China and spend a few days solely focused on setting up a Chinese bank account so that they could use WeChat Pay. However, from 2018, the Chinese government has started clamping down on foreigners having bank accounts in China, unless they had a business interest in China or were students. So many of these bank accounts have been shut down. For a foreigner without a Chinese bank account, the only way to fund your WeChat Pay account is to ask a Chinese friend to transfer money into it. Even though cash is still widely accepted, WeChat is considered the safer way to take payment as there is still a concern around fake banknotes being circulated.] 2. Bad service isn’t a thing of the past yet, but it is fast becoming obsolete in the digital world I don’t know many people who would say that the Chinese are synonymous with good service. The Chinese have always been efficient — yell for a top-up in tea and you might get a blank look or no response at all, but you’ll get your tea pretty quickly. Efficient, yes. Polite and service-minded, not so much. And being cheated is still a risk. A friend got into a taxi after a night out, and after the car had started moving, was told by the taxi driver than he had to pay a flat fee of RMB 100 for the trip given that it was late. It was 4am, my friend was tired, so he agreed. I was in the next taxi, a more honest one perhaps, so I only had to pay the meter price: RMB 45. None of that is surprising for anyone who has visited China. What was surprising to me though, was finding out that the behaviour of service providers on tech platforms was markedly different from the behaviour of service providers offline. Service providers on tech platforms behave a lot more like what I would expect in London or Singapore. Didi Chuxing (the Chinese Uber) drivers are exceptionally polite, with one of my drivers even driving twenty minutes out of his way to pick me up, as I had entered the wrong address. At the end of any Didi journey, I would hear the familiar refrain: “Five stars?” Merchants on Taobao (the Chinese Amazon) often put in little gifts to surprise their customers with each purchase. It definitely makes buying a delight when you get something extra. And I’ve found the user experience on the tech platforms far better than those that I have grown accustomed to. Better than Uber, better than Amazon. Need to message your Didi driver but you’re in a hurry? Don’t worry, there are pre-set messages which you can click on. You don’t speak Chinese? Don’t worry, the messages are translated for you. Pre-defined messages that are translated in Didi Chuxing App — so that you can communicate with the driver even if you don’t speak the same language. It also allows for voice messages which is much easier! Your friend has shared an item on the Taobao app with you? All you need to do is copy the link and open the Taobao app. Taobao will automatically detect that you have copied a link and will send you to the item’s page. Need to buy something online? No problem, it’ll be delivered to you within 1–3 days on average, regardless of where in China the item is located. Every day, people wait for their online deliveries that arrive like clockwork Takeaway: Poor service and trust issues still very much plague the offline world, albeit to a lesser extent than before. However, in the digital world, poor service and trust issues are very much left in the dust as the Chinese tech giants work extra hard to gain their customers’ trust and provide a seamless, truly on-demand, customer experience. In fact, the level of service is so high that the thought of meeting Chinese consumer expectation in the digital world is a little intimidating! 3. You cannot overstate the role of government in China One of the many tech R&D institutes that we visited During the two weeks, we visited a variety of old and new industries: tech incubators, mobile phone makers, household giants, car axle manufacturers, and WeChat. At every visit, the person showing us around would open by introducing the government’s policy in their area and how their business has been affected by government policy. The government’s hand in driving business was undeniable. Dongguan was not the industrial city I expected — it had wide tree-lined streets and reminded me of cities in Europe Dongguan, an industrial city also known as the ‘factory of the world’, is responsible for producing many of the world’s goods (e.g. at one point, 95% of the world’s woollen products are estimated to be produced there). When Chinese exports were badly hit by the 2008 financial crisis, Dongguan suffered the most. In recent years, Dongguan has repositioned itself as a robotics base and the fingerprints of the government can be found all over this reinvention. We visited huge R&D centres established with grants from the government with the sole purpose of upskilling the industries in Dongguan to enable them to catch up with their more technologically advanced neighbour, Shenzhen, the Silicon Valley of China. The R&D centres were tasked with visiting the factories of Dongguan one by one, to assess what new technologies were required and to help the factories bridge any skills and technological gaps they had. This resulted in the advancement of robotics technology to automate entire factory lines and upskilling workers so that they were able to operate the new technology. This way, Dongguan wouldn’t be left to become obsolete while Shenzhen thrived — they would all thrive together. Introduction to some of the technologies they were focusing on Witnessing this, it made me wonder whether Brexit would have happened if the UK government had stepped in when factories, shipyards and mines were closing in the 1980s, and helped to upskill those industries and workers rather than leave them to become obsolete. I know Brexit wasn’t merely about jobs but, still. In our group, we had an entrepreneur-turned-government-official from Malaysia who later commented that this was the first time in her life that she understood the purpose of government. Throughout her career, she had wondered whether the sole purpose of government was politics, and only in China did she understand the immense power of government to drive the economy and make change happen. In case you were wondering, this isn’t simply because our visit was organised by the government. I was part of a different trip to China last year — visiting companies like Alibaba, Disney, Astra Zeneca, Corning — organised by INSEAD business school. And the themes were similar: government policy drives everything in China so businesses were razor focused on staying close to the government and aligning their business model to government policies. On the other end of the spectrum are the Chinese companies that are looking to expand in the US. We were told that due to the recent US-China trade war, some Chinese companies with US interests were now very careful not to be seen as being too close to the Chinese government. Government grants have been returned, and contact with the government has abated somewhat. Some company visits that were initially planned for our trip had also been cancelled on our trip at the request of the company. When government is so big, businesses have a delicate balancing act to perform. Takeaway? Success in business in China correlates strongly and directly to where the government winds are blowing, more so than perhaps anywhere else in the world. 4. China is open for business and wants you to know it The trip was organised by the Guangdong government for Southeast Asian entrepreneurs to bolster ties between persons of Chinese ethnicity and China. It was the first time I had heard of this kind of trip, but others in the group had participated in multiple such trips over the years. All-expenses-paid. This underscores the extent of the soft power that the Chinese are exerting. The 2008 financial crisis had hit Chinese exports hard, and we were told that this made China realise that America was less reliable a trading partner than it had initially thought. Since then, China has redoubled its efforts to increase its trade with the rest of the world. Everywhere we went as well, people were keen to connect. They wanted to know about the opportunities in our countries and how we could collaborate. The Chinese in Guangzhou loved durians. Could we have a durian export business? Food safety issues played on many of their minds. Could we export wheat from Kazakhstan to China via high speed rail? How about medical tourism? So long as the potential business remained sufficiently small as to not threaten any domestic industry giant, any opportunity was up for discussion. At the end of every meeting, no matter how senior the person meeting us, they added us as a contact on WeChat. We were repeatedly assured that we should message them directly if we thought of a way we could work together. Takeaway? The message from the Chinese we met was loud and clear: we’re open, let’s make money together. The crux being, together. The Chinese government is notoriously protective of their domestic industries, and I don’t expect that to go away anytime soon. Hopefully these observations are useful to founders who are eyeing the Chinese market with interest, like I am. I came back teeming with ideas and incredibly hopeful about all the potential business opportunities in China — it really is the modern-day gold rush for those who dare.

In a world where smartphone brands like Samsung and Apple already existed, Chinese brand OnePlus took a bold step by introducing the world to a smartphone of its own. The company made its debut in the year 2013, with the main motive to make a high-end device with an affordable price range. And the company did just that! True to its tagline, “Never Settle”, the company brought to us the flagship killer OnePlus smartphones with amazing features and a price tag that was easy on the pockets. OnePlus has come a really long way since its first smartphone. Let’s take a look at how the smartphones have evolved since OnePlus One to the upcoming OnePlus 6. OnePlus One Oneplus.in OnePlus One was introduced in 2014. Unlike all other smartphones, which are easily available in the market, this smartphone required an invite for a buyer to place their order. However, it was the 64GB internal storage capacity that caught everyone’s attention. When most smartphones back in the day offered 32GB storage, OnePlus was offering a whopping 64GB at a reasonable price range. As for the design, the smartphone stood out from the rest of the other Android smartphones back in the day. OnePlus One sported a unique sandstone rear panel. Other than that, the smartphone came with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor. Additionally, with a 13-megapixel rear camera, the smartphone was able to capture some incredible images. If that wasn’t enough, the camera also had support for recording videos in 4K resolution and capturing images in burst mode. For a smartphone with features like most high-end devices, it was priced at Rs 21,000. Some of the similar features that we saw again were the sandstone finish and the storage capacity. Nevertheless, the company managed to make a lot of changes to its second smartphone. One key feature which was introduced was the ‘slider’. Positioned on the left side of the smartphone, the slider allowed users to switch between ring, silent and do not disturb mode. On the other hand, another interesting feature was the introduction of the USB Type-C port. Back in 2015, a very few smartphones supported this port. So every OnePlus 2 user had to make sure to carry around their personal charger. Apart from that, the smartphone continued its support for 4K recording and came up with the new HDR mode. OnePlus 3 Oneplus.in When compared to the first two flagship smartphones by the company, OnePlus 3 stood apart in terms of design. Instead of a sandstone finish, OnePlus 3 was the first smartphone by the company to sport a metal finish. Moreover, the rear panel also came with antenna lines on the top and bottom. Other than that, the phone also featured rounded edges which gave it a very classy look. Moreover, the smartphone was also the first to come with ‘Dash Charging’. This allowed users to charge their OnePlus 3 smartphone in a matter of 30 minutes. Some of the other features included an upgraded Snapdragon 820 processor and 6GB RAM smartphone. During its launch, the smartphone was priced at Rs 27,999. OnePlus 3T This smartphone was an obvious upgraded variant of the OnePlus 3 smartphone. It made its debut 3–4 months after its predecessor. Some of the updates included- a better front camera, a bigger battery and an even more powerful processor. The company also launched a new 128GB storage variant of this smartphone which was priced at Rs 34,999. Similarly, the base variant was priced at Rs 29,999. OnePlus 5 Oneplus.in OnePlus 5 created a buzz for being the first smartphone by the company to sport a dual rear camera setup. The setup included a 16-megapixel and 20-megapixel sensor with support for portrait mode. Apart from the vertically placed dual cameras, the smartphone came with the similar metal unibody design as its predecessors. Furthermore, the smartphone was fuelled by a powerful Snapdragon 835 processor. Even this smartphone was made available in two storage variants- 6GB RAM with 64GB of internal storage and 8GB of RAM with 128GB of internal storage. OnePlus 5T After seeing the success of the OnePlus 3T, the company decided to launch another updated variant called OnePlus 5T. Interestingly, OnePlus 5T was the first smartphone by the company to sport an 18:9 aspect ratio. This meant that the placement of the fingerprint scanner was moved to the rear panel. Other than that, the only other upgrade was the rear camera features. The update included support for low-light photography. With this phone, the company decided to go on a different track and launched a OnePlus 5T Star Wars Variant which was a treat for all the Star Wars fans. OnePlus 6 This smartphone made its debut on May 16, 2018, in London. However, except for a complete design revamp, there is nothing that we haven’t seen before on the OnePlus devices. As for the design change, OnePlus has followed the most predictable notch display with rounded edges. What’s interesting is the glass design on the rear panel made of Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Additionally, we know that the . The smartphone is available in 6GB RAM (64GB storage, 8GB RAM (128GB storage) and 8GB RAM (256GB storage) variants.
