4th issue! If you missed the last three months check them out here, here and here.

If it’s your first time here…(otherwise skip to below)

Being a web developer is a fantastic career option. You have many job opportunities, you can work around the world, and you get to solve hard problems. One thing that is hard, however, is staying up to date with the constantly evolving ecosystem. You want to be a top performing web developer, coder, programer, software developer, but you don’t have time to select from hundreds of articles, videos and podcasts each day.

This monthly newsletter is going to be focused on keeping up to date with the industry, keeping your skills sharp, without wasting your valuable time. I will be sharing the most important articles, podcasts and videos of the month. Think Tim Ferriss and the Pareto Principle (80/20 rule) meeting the Software Development world. What’s the 20% that will get you 80% of the results?

If you want to be notified of the next issue with industry news and tips, subscribe below:

What you missed in October as a web developer…

Javascript + Curry 🍛

It’s not just delicious cuisine, currying in javascript can be very useful especially when it comes to functional programming. This is a great introduction to the topic.

CSS Cook Book 🍳

MDN just released this great recourse that teaches you how to use (or just copy the code) for some of the most common CSS problems when it comes to creating layout. Weird, no one in the world ever gets frustrated doing layout in CSS right…?

React Hook…It’s all the rage

Everyone is going gaga over the new proposed React Hook. I don’t like to get too excited about these things until they are actually stable and not just experimental, but since a lot of people are excited about this, here are the details according to Dan Abramov, and the official documentation.

While we are on the topic, here is a 60 second tutorial on the new React.lazy API and how it works.

Developer salaries exposed 💸

Lots of people shared their historic salaries as developers and programmers. If you ever wondered how you can evolve as a developer and the salaries you can expect, this is a great thread.

What’s coming next in Vue

Evan You released the plans for what’s coming up in the future of Vue.js. See? I don’t always just talk about React! Speaking of…

Create React App 2.0

More React.js news! The popular tool that lets you get up and running with React projects in just a few seconds just got a new release. See the official announcement here for all of the changes and updates.

Learn Data Structures + Algorithms 🤓

So… I just released a new course teaching you how to Master the Coding Interview. You should check it out. What? Did I just try to sell you something? ITS MY NEWSLETTER, I’LL DO WHAT I WANT!… Ok, sorry to raise my voice like that. Anyway, back to to the newsletter…

What’s the deal with Web Components

A world where you can share components between Angular, Vue, React and plain HTML5? That’s the future Web Components promises. It’s still not there yet, and people have been excited about this for a while, but we will patiently wait and see what happens.

Teach me Pub Sub pattern

It’s a very important design pattern that all programmers should know. This is a great resource introducing you to the topic.

Don’t just microservice everything 📦

An excellent read on why you shouldn’t do things because it is hip and new. If you want to be a senior developer and be able to make decision on architecture, these are the kind of things you should be aware of.

Github Actions 🕺

It’s still in beta, but in case you are interested, because a lot of people are, Github Actions just came out that lets you automate a lot of your workflow when using Github.

JS Foundation ❤️ Node.js Foundation

The two communities are joining forces and merging together to help the broader javascript community.

Big Tech News(New Section!) 🏢

This is a new segment where I talk about what some of the big tech companies are doing. Pretty self explanatory from the title right?

IBM bought Red Hat for $34 billion as they try and get a leg up on being a cloud vendor→ New breakthrough in fibre optics could make internet speeds (and transfer of data) 100x faster→ Coinbase open sourced their powerful security tool

Completely useless to your career but still great (New Section!) 🙃

Have a bunch of paper and some time to kill? Then you should definitely check this out.

Best Resource of the Month ✅

An excellent read about the state of javascript, some of it’s issues, some of the solutions, and what we have coming ahead. I agree with a lot of the points made here: https://www.reaktor.com/blog/fear-trust-and-javascript/

Trick of the Month 🌗
