Russia has been trying to take away their citizens Internet Privacy and Freedom for years going as far as banning music and listing it as extremist content. The new laws going into effect on Wednesday will be a massive blow to all Internet Privacy advocates in Russia. These laws will allow for the restriction of Internet Access and therefore the restriction of access to Information. Information is the most powerful commodity in the world and if you give all of yours to one person or one group of people you will make them more powerful than you. This is how Totalitarian Governments have worked for centuries, by obtaining information on it’s people and limiting it’s peoples access to information and then using that against them in order to control them. That’s how governments have controlled their citizens for centuries and that’s how Russia will continue to be controlled. Starting in 2018 Russia will have laws going into effect that force VPN Companies to monitor, log and report all of their Users data to the government. This is why Internet Privacy is so important. It’s not because you are trying to hide something or because you don’t want someone listening in on your private moments. While these are all good reasons to want Internet privacy they aren’t the important ones. Personally I know I wouldn’t want anyone listening in on me in the shower and I have absolutely nothing to hide (besides my terrible singing), but these are not the reasons why I want Internet Privacy and Anonymity and they shouldn’t be your reasons either. No, I’m not a tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorist, but I am a history buff and if there is one thing that History tells us it’s that it will always repeat. Well what does that mean? It means that what we are seeing in Russia, in China and in North Korea is what we should expect from all of our governments, because it is inevitable. Eventually the government will take on to much power, it will lose control and turn tyrannical, then it will turn on it’s citizens and try to control them. This has been the story for every country at one point throughout history and it will continue to be so until the end of time. Plato came to the conclusion the democracy and freedom lead to tyranny therefor making democracy the worst kind of government, but I think differently. I believe that all forms of government lead to tyranny and that society as a whole leads to forming Government. We can’t prevent these things from happening, but we can expect them and protect ourselves when they arise. The human race is a pack animal meaning that we can’t stand to be alone. That’s why we come together to form civilizations and systems, and once those are formed they will slowly or quickly obtain more and more power. Until they are over powered and become power hungry at which point they will turn tyrannical. Luckily if you are living in a country that is experiencing something like this or you are worried that it might happen in yours you have people outside looking out for you. Earlier today Torguardannounced that they will not be complying with Russia’s laws and that sense they are based outside of Russia the government can’t force them to comply. If you are living in a country that is under tyrannical rule your best bet for Internet Privacy, Freedom and Safety is to use a VPN Provider based outside of your country. A VPN can’t function properly if it is being monitored and logged, and you can’t be free on the Internet unless you use one. Hackers may be the most popular threat on the Internet, but they aren’t the biggest threat. That will always be reserved to those that try to control the Internet and use the Information from it to their own benefit. Until the Internet is decentralized and secured we will never have Internet Privacy or Security, so it’s up to us to make our Internet activity Private and Secure.
