Most CEOs recognize that the buck stops with them when it comes to the first two.
Unfortunately itâs the third oneâbuilding the teamâthat matters the most. So why do so many CEOs try to delegate it to someone else?
If youâre building a team and you really want the best, you canât delegate. Finding the best candidates is not your boardâs job, your investorsâ job, or even your HR departmentâs job. And for godâs sake, itâs not a recruiterâs job. Itâs your job.
It needs your direct attention, because that amazing person youâre looking for isnât looking for you. They arenât looking for a new job. Theyâre happy where they are. So if you want them, you have to go get them.
And hereâs the best way Iâve found to do it: start taking names. Reach out to the smartest people you know and ask âwho are the five best people you know who are doing this job?â Do that three times and thereâs your list. Donât limit your list to people who are out of work or actively lookingâyou want the best, NOT the available best.
Now go get âem.
More often than not, youâll failâremember, these people arenât looking.
When that happens, just finish your phone call with âwho are the five best people you know who are doing this job?â And off you go again.
When people tell you, âyouâll never be able to get that person,â you just have to reply, âleave it to me.â
In recruitingâas with everything entrepreneurs doâif you paid attention to the ones telling you âthat will never workâ, youâd have never even started.
