This work is currently ongoing through mechanisms such as Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF), Digital Transformation with Africa initiative (DTA), the Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity (APEP), the G7, OECD, TTC, and the Quad. The United States supports the trusted free flow of data and an open Internet with strong and effective protections for individuals’ human rights and privacy and measures to preserve governments’ abilities to enforce laws and advance policies in the public interest. Legitimate concerns about data privacy can be addressed through protective mechanisms that follow the data while at the same time facilitate cross-border data flows and strengthen global cooperation among enforcement authorities. The United States will continue championing trusted cross-border data flows by promoting data transfer mechanisms that improve interoperability between different data privacy regimes. We’ve seen how due to the ecosystem in place, thanks to the synchronization between government, startups, and venture capital. Spain is becoming an essential hub for startups to flourish Today we see this trend is keeping its peace, as has become one of the leading contributors to the European Tech Champions Initiative (ECTI), a new fund of funds aimed at expanding Europe’s venture capital markets. Spain The initiative, funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and five member states, including Spain, will inject €3.75bn into the continent’s startup ecosystem, particularly into those that are in the final stages of growth. The Spanish contribution is €1bn, the same amount as France and Germany, while Italy and Belgium are providing €150m and €100m, respectively. Larger funds on the make ECTI is a response to the lack of funding available to European startups when they reach the final stage of development, often when they require rounds of €100m, which few European funds can provide. The new fund will contribute to creating larger funds that can generate the necessary amounts and, thus, reduce the number of startups that move to the US for funding. Working as an educator in tech is very much an exercise in branding. If you define yourself as a trainer then clients assume you don’t really know what you’re talking about. But present yourself as a nerdy developer and they will assume you can’t teach. So you learn to strike a balance between the extremes with good humour and a healthy dose of humility. It doesn’t help that there was never a term for the role. But a few years back, the label popped into existence, and has steadily grown in popularity. Senior folk much smarter than myself have started using the term in anger, and a quick Google search tells you that . Developer Advocate Developer Relations DR is an official thing in the business world What interests me, and motivated this article, is why the role emerged now. After all we managed perfectly well for several decades without Developer Advocates, so why should they matter today? After some consideration I believe the advent of Developer Advocacy is a direct result of the fall of Consultancy and the rise of Mentoring. The Fall of Consultancy When I started as a developer back in the 1990’s the Consultancy role was essential to the industry. Simply put Consultants were the custodians of magic knowledge. Let’s take a typical 1990’s enterprise vendor called MegaCorp, who produce a major database, transaction manager or server product. Everything they do is closed source and made available only on a commercial basis. Documentation is solely available via subscription within a partnership programme and training is only provided from authorised suppliers at a hefty price. This restricted access to knowledge and expertise created a gap where consultancy could flourish. Consultants were typically ex-MegaCorp staff, or employed by MegaCorp satellite companies. They had years of insider knowledge gained from private conversations. They had been on the original standards committees or helped with early proofs of concept. Frequently they had written their own libraries of diagnostic tools, which gave them a head start when troubleshooting. Fast forward twenty years and everything has changed. Community editions of products are the norm. Documentation is online and universally accessible. Vendors encourage senior staff to address esoteric bugs on forums like StackOverflow. Extensions to products are typically exposed as open source projects, if not out of altruism, then in hope of conference workshops and book deals. All of this has eroded what makes the consultancy role special. This is not to deny that there are still world-class individuals, who make a living advising clients in their specialist subject. But these are the best of the best. The hordes of consultants that once dominated the industry are long gone and show no signs of returning. The Rise of Mentoring From my description above you might think that all is well in developer land, but of course this is not entirely the case. From being starved of information developers today risk being overwhelmed. Googling for tutorials on any moderately popular language or framework will give you the phone book. You will find a plethora of Medium articles, blog posts, e-learning tutorials, academic courses etc… The vast majority of these resources will go back over the same ground, frequently staying on the happy path and away from the pain points. As someone who has written dozens of Getting Started tutorials it’s easy to spot when an author takes a shortcut and sidesteps an issue that will bite anyone trying to use the technology in anger. The situation is worse when you have frameworks and languages that are going through a rapid evolution and updating their best practices at high speed. The worst offender here is JavaScript Frameworks, but Cloud Providers aren’t far behind. Even established languages like Java and Scala are retooling their feature set to stay current. Today it is easy to become overwhelmed, bewildered and lost. So the ability to access mentors becomes vitally important. We can all benefit from having a tour guide when we start out, or when switching platforms or job roles. Your mentor doesn’t need to be a world class authority, they just need the expertise to help you move further and faster than you could by yourself - ideally with a lot less stress. If you subscribe to it’s actually more beneficial for your mentor to be close to your level of expertise. the Dreyfus model of learning Welcome to the World Of Tomorrow In an environment where consultancy matters less and mentoring matters more, it becomes important for companies to reach out and engage with the developers that make up their target audience. Whereas in the past it was enough to have online documentation or introductory article it now becomes important to create a path of least resistance toward your product. some an Vendors of developer tools have always been engaged in a Darwinian arms race, but these days it has taken on an added dimension. Survival of the friendliest if you will. Hence companies need a new kind of advocate, who can skilfully manage the outreach for them. These folk need to be developers, but also authors, trainers, presenters, mentors and (whisper it softly) salespeople. Of course, some of us are already in this role. We can but hope, that having a name for the trade makes us feel a little less isolated, and enables us to work closer together and make the software industry less foreboding and more accessible to everyone. But I never really got the point of using Glitch until I’ve seen and at doing a demo on stage fews ago in San Francisco. Now, I really see the whole potential when you are an API provider. It gives you new ways to interact with your community. Give life to your coding-samples 🐛🦋 Generally, API providers would provide some coding samples on how to use their SDK in the context of a small app. It usually sits on a Github repo. And sometimes come with a live version of the example hosted somewhere, so people can try. But there is still some friction before the developer tries to deploy their own for their own need. Fork the repo, clone it locally, install all the dependencies, update the framework version, launch it and test. This could be a hassle and another drop-out in your conversion funnel. With Glitch, hackers could “remix” your example, modify it, and see results live in a matter of seconds. Solana’s recent governance vote on the SIMD-228 proposal, which put forward the idea of lowering Solana’s inflation rate and boosting staking, showed the network can effectively handle major voting decisions without a hitch on the technical level. Meanwhile, we’ve also seen throughput on the network increasing to accommodate the huge volume of memecoin trading. However, one major hurdle remains on its path to becoming the “Nasdaq on the blockchain” – MEV bots. Meanwhile, we’ve also seen throughput on the network increasing to accommodate the huge volume of memecoin trading. However, one major hurdle remains on its path to becoming the “Nasdaq on the blockchain” – MEV bots. “Nasdaq on the blockchain” MEV stands for maximum extractable value and refers to the additional profit that can be made from a transaction. MEV is like waiting in line at a store checkout, having someone cut in front of you to buy everything in sight, and then selling it back to the rest of the line at a higher price. The MEV problem So how do MEV bots actually work? When you make a transaction, like buying or swapping tokens, that transaction goes into a waiting area, generally called a mempool, before it’s added to a blockchain. Validators – the people or computers that add blocks to the chain – or bots can see these waiting transactions. They sometimes reorder or add their own transactions first to make a profit, often paying huge fees to cut in line. Advocates see MEV as a byproduct of a healthy network and free market mechanics, while others stress the downsides for users. Whichever camp you find yourself in, though, MEV bots have been responsible for huge losses due to front-running and sandwich attacks. For example, Ethereum saw a total of $675 million extracted through MEV between December 2019 to September 2022. total of $675 million extracted total of $675 million extracted However, since 2024, Solana has been seeing a marked uptick in MEV activity due to sandwich bots. This means traders on Solana are losing profits on a daily basis to MEV bots. As such, unless the ecosystem figures out a way to approach the challenges posed by MEV, it threatens Solana's goal of providing distributed financial services at the speed of light. marked uptick in MEV marked uptick in MEV MEV on Solana is different The thing is, MEV is intrinsic to all blockchains, especially when block proposers rotate. It’s not unusual for validators on any blockchain to manipulate transactions to extract profit. This can occur during NFT mints, liquidations, swaps, or by exploiting arbitrage opportunities. Not all MEV is bad, though, but certainly sandwiching and frontrunning are. \ Due to Solana's speed and architecture, however, certain types of MEVs are naturally eliminated, and network participants' ability to extract value hinges on their ability to outperform the time to finality of Solana transactions. Moreover, since Solana doesn't have a mempool, MEV searchers have to integrate with existing high-stake node operators to see potential value extraction opportunities. Mempools aren't the solution However, without a place to queue transfers, there's no other way than simply trying again when a transfer fails. To fix this, in 2023, Jito launched a protocol off-chain that auctioned partial blockspace, providing inclusion guarantees for sets of transactions called bundles. The aim of creating an auction mechanism off-chain was to increase efficiency and reduce spam. While this move pulled existing MEV activity into the open, mitigated some of the front-running activities, and established a transparent auction mechanism, the lack of solid MEV protection tools still left the end user at a severe disadvantage. As complaints from DeFi protocols and users mounted, Jito Labs shut down its mempool entirely. But Pandora's box had been opened, and private, even less beneficial mempools took its place. Centralization risks According to a Helius report earlier this year, much of the MEV revenue results from sandwich attacks and accrues to just one centralized entity (DeezNode). This suggests that while Jito’s memepool was at least allowing this to happen transparently, these attacks have now moved into the dark. report report sandwich attacks sandwich attacks The key concern here is that if those validators that extract more value are left unchecked, it will be a permanent drag to Solana users. In short, fixing MEV is not solely about creating a network that disincentivizes validators from lining their pockets with profits they sandwiched out of memecoin traders; it's also about ensuring the integrity and decentralization of the network. The search for a fix MEV is a natural part of every blockchain network, but currently, it's benefitting a few at the expense of many. And this problem will likely increase exponentially, with Jito Co-Founder Zano Sherwani predicting MEV will become a billion-dollar sector. sector sector Ethereum addressed its MEV problem mainly by establishing a transparent marketplace for it. This is complemented by various tools, including MEV-protection bots and RPCs, that aim to protect users from MEV. On Solana, suggestions to address the issue include whitelists – a last-resort option as it would lead to potential censorship – implementing RFQ systems, which replace AMMs with professional market makers to provide fair pricing to end-users, and protocol changes. However, protocol changes, such as introducing concurrent leaders throughout the block production process to prevent one from becoming the target of MEV bots, will take years to implement. We might not have years to find ways to address MEV on Solana, as users quickly move away once they are burned. concurrent concurrent Emerging solutions Fortunately, MEV research on Solana has picked up, and while developers are working on protocol changes, there are plenty of things other network participants are delivering. Ellipsis Labs, for example, recently launched its first experimental sandwich-resistant AMM. AMM AMM Meanwhile, Titan’s swap feature gives users more control with live updates that cuts the time it takes to execute a swap, reducing the attack surface by reducing expected slippage. Jito bundles are also used extensively to provide further protection from searchers. Another app-layer approach is implementing dynamic slippage, where the Talos algorithm, powered by statistics and machine learning, adjusts in real time to reduce negative slippage. Lastly, mirroring how TradFi is kept in check through the social layer, Solana stakers could stir network behavior by staking their funds with validators that don't engage in malicious practices. Simple, yet effective. A combination of stronger MEV protection, protocol layer changes, and social layer influence is a strong base for creating a better network for everyone involved. Only once Solana effectively addresses MEV can it truly shine as the mainstream blockchain it was designed to be.

Hi, readers. I’m excited to introduce myself to all of you! I’m Tara García Mathewson, one of The Markup’s newest reporters, and I will be covering higher education here. My first story ran this past week, and I’d like to tell you more about it, as well as what I plan to cover on this beat. First, in case you missed it, my story is about bias embedded in AI detectors, which became popular on college campuses after ChatGPT created a new panic about cheating. The detectors aim to identify AI-generated writing. While you might consider that a laudable goal, AI detectors work by searching for predictable phrasing, simple vocabulary, and less complex grammar—hallmarks of AI-generated writing that coincidentally match the writing style of many non-native English speakers. The detectors, my article explains, make many international students uniquely vulnerable to false accusations of cheating. I spoke with several students who were worried about the possible consequences, ranging from uncomfortable conversations with their professors and hurt feelings to long-term reputational damage and potential deportation. I also spoke with educators who were frustrated by the detectors’ accuracy problems, as well as the panic around ChatGPT’s use on college campuses. my article explains If you missed the story last week, please check it out and share it with any college students or faculty in your life. While elite institutions will appear in my stories, I will look most closely at what is happening at the places enrolling the vast majority of U.S. higher education students, meaning less-selective institutions like community colleges and public four-year institutions. I also want to investigate the companies making money off for-profit education and the multibillion-dollar ed tech market. I’ll be back in your inboxes when I find examples of their profits coming at the expense of students. I have had a number of conversations with researchers, advocates, IT professionals, professors, and students over the last few weeks, getting the lay of the land in the higher ed world.
