5 Really Cool Tech and Sci-Fi Movies/TV Shows You Should Watch

This article briefly covers some of my favorite science fiction, virus, time-bending, and technology-related movies and TV shows in existence as a fellow nerd in society. I will not give major heartbreaker spoilers, I promise :).

October Sky

This movie inspired me from a young to dive further into science fairs and robotics. October Sky (1999) focuses on the true story of Homer Hickam and how he overcame Immense social family pressure with his friends; one of those being straying from coal mine work.

It is undoubtedly one of my favorite movies starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Plus, if you love rocketry or inspirational movies, then I highly recommend you watch this film. One of my favorite memories is opening a letter reply I received from Homer Hickam when I was little and partook in a Girls in Engineering Mathematics & Science (GEMS) program in both elementary school and two short summers at Augsburg College. It was a program I was part of for quite a few years that tremendously impacted me.

Mickey Virus

I grew up watching a lot of Bollywood comedic romance films. In Mickey Virus (2013), things go sideways (a robbery to be exact) when he wishes to help the woman he has immense feelings for. Having spent my fair share of days running antivirus scans in my Help Desk days, I enjoyed this movie overall in good fun. So if you’re not opposed to music, dance, a bit of romance, and silly scenes, then you may certainly enjoy it.

This is not at all my favorite Bollywood movie of course. Lagaan (2001), Hum Tum (2004), and the Dhoom (franchise) are far superior to this movie but still, it’s the only movie that comes to my mind in terms of computer viruses in the Bollywood world.

P.S. I use the Windows Defender built-in AV full scan offline and additional check Malwarebytes when it comes down to scanning PCs. If all else fails and malicious signatures are still afoot, then I usually wipe the PC and set it up from scratch. You can’t take chances when it comes down to computer viruses.

Clockstoppers

Okay, who wouldn’t want to have the ability to turn back time? This is one of my childhood faves. It’s a great family movie. It had such a sweet and funny protagonist. Imagine if you had a watch that could freeze time but there were negative side effects that come with altering time. Clockstoppers (2002) is a whole lot of fun overall. Aside from Time Machine (2002) and Time After Time (2017), it’s one of my all-time faves in terms of time travel adventures. P.S. Time Machine (2002) always makes me tear up a bit and Time After Time (2017), which I saw on CW Seed should have lasted more seasons in my opinion. Additionally. I loved In Time (2011) which was truly intense — time is money.

TRON: Legacy

The whole concept of TRON: Legacy (2010) and this reboot follows a young man who enters an arcade and is faced with arena fights, uncovering what happened to his father, and finding his way out of chaos. If you enjoy movies that make you feel as if you’re entering a game, then check this out. Of course, I love The Matrix trilogy and the overall franchise, but I am a huge fan of the music especially in TRON: Legacy and the character’s clothing designs. Speaking of music and memorable motorcycle scenes akin to TRON: Legacy, Nerve (2016) was interesting to watch — I’m not a huge fan of “dare” films but the music in Nerve (2016) was awesome. I have always loved arcade designs so TRON: Legacy is a movie I’ve rewatched multiple times. You may even like TRON: Uprising (2012), an animated version in-off that didn’t last long but I loved it as well!

Mr. Robot

I’ll be honest with you guys there were a few scenes I didn’t comprehend in Mr. Robot (2015) that left me scratching my head, but I truly loved the concept of following a cyber security engineer and the whole vibe of the show was quite good. While it’s been a while since I’ve seen it — just expect several twists and turns. When I was watching it I kept thinking about the movie V for Vendetta (2005) — you’ll understand why if you take a peek at some of the stills or trailers.

The filmography was superb and there were undoubtedly interesting characters. If you’ve ever had an interest in computer programming or using hacking for good like Kevin Mitnick, you may certainly enjoy this TV series. I know Good Trouble (2019) primarily focuses on relationships, but I adored the tech startup and programming scenes. Ultimately, Women in Tech (WiT) and quite a few other prominent issues are highlighted in the show and are quite frankly relatable.

So yeah these are some of my favorite techie films and TV shows on planet Earth. I have a jumbo list overall, but these come to my mind first and foremost. Lastly, quite a fun one is of course the IT Crowd (2006) has some LOL moments.
